ned/preorchestratedmultimediapresentationforwhichitisassumedthatitsrealizationisrequestedmanytimesbymanydi erent(possiblysimultaneous)users.Manymultimediaapplicationdomainssuchasthosementionedbeforeneedtosupportapoolofsuchpreorchestratedmul-timediapresentations.Supportofuserinteractionsisanimportantpropertytobeprovidedwithinthiscontext(\interactivemultimedia).Itprovidesforusers exibilityinpresentationcontrolbyo eringthepossibilitytoadaptthepresentationrealizationphasetotheindividualneeds.Playoutmanagement,ingeneral,isthetaskthatdealswiththerealizationofsucharbitrarypreorchestratedinteractivemultimediapresentations.Itman-agesthepresentationrealizationphasebytakingcareofthenecessarysystem12Chapter1tasksandtheirinterdependenciesaccordingtothepresentationspeci cation.Thesesystemtasksarethedevicemanagement,thedatastreamhandling,theenforcementofthesynchronizationconstraints,andthehandlingofrandomuserinteractions.Severalreasonsmotivatetheusageofamultimediadatabase(system)withinthiscontext.Thetypicaldatabaseproperties(e.g.,datasharing,persistency,durability,consistency)providesigni canteaseforthemanagementoftheinfor-mation,application-speci cpresentationsarecomposedof.Arichdatamodelwhichprovidesmodellingconstructsfortherepresentationofmultimediapre-sentationsallowsfora ne-grainedandpowerfulmodellingofmultimediain-formation.Sincethepresentationsarecreatedformultipleandsimultaneoususagebymanydi erentusers,propersupportformulti-useraccesscanobvi-ouslybeprovidedbyadatabasemanagementsystem.Consideringboth,thefactthatmanymultimediaapplicationsneedplayoutmanagementandthebene tsoftheusageofamultimediadatabasefortheseapplications,thischapteraddressesplayoutmanagementformultimediadatabases.Afteradescriptionofplayoutmanagementfromageneralpointofview,wediscussalternativesolutionsforaframeworkinwhichplayoutmanagementisprovidedforamultimediadatabase.Amajorissuerelatedtothisistoidentifythecomponentsoftheentiresystemandtheirfunctionalityneededtoperformtheplayoutmanagementtask.Basedontheevaluationofalternativeapproaches,wemotivatethatmultime-diadatabasemanagementsystemsshouldperformtheplayoutmanagementbyprovidinganintegratedgenericplayoutmanagementservice.Inanalogytotheprovisionof,e.g.,physicaldataindependency,\playoutmanagementindependencyisprovidedtoo.Thatis,theplayoutmanagementserviceofthemultimediadatabasemanagementsystemmanagestheoutputdevicesin-volved,handlesthedatastreams,enforcesthesynchronizationconstraints,han-dlesrandomuserinteractions,and(fordistributedsystems)evenadaptsthepresentationparameterstothechangingcharacteristicsoftheoverallsystemenvironment.Fromourperspective,thisisanaturaladjustmentofdatabasemanagementsystemfunctionalitytothenewrequirementsofmultimediaap-plications.Thisallowsdeveloperstofocusontheapplicationspeci cproblemsandrelievesthemfromthetaskofencodingpresentationfunctionalityorthecouplingofapresentationtool.Thegeneralgoalistoachievethatstorage,retrieval,bu ermanagement,transport(overapossiblyhigh-speednetwork),aswellasplayoutmanagementarehandledbyacomprehensivesystem,themultimediadatabasemanagementsystem,byusingproperservicesfrom,e.g.,operatingsystemsandnetworks.Aimingatthisgoal,e cientsolutionsforPlayoutManagementinMultimediaDatabaseSystems3themanagementofthedependenciesamongthesetaskscanbeachievedwith-outcompromisingonthefunctionality.Furthermore,weexpect,thatotherdatabaseinternalcomponentscandealwithmultimediadatamoreoptimallyiftheplayoutmanagementiswellintegratedwiththem.Anexampleofamultimediadatabasesystemwithaninteg
