ThegreatestmanfortheprotectionoftheMockingbirdsYuHe.ZhangHavebeenreadingHarperLee’sbook‘TokillaMockingbird’forhalfasemester,IamgoingtoanalyzethecharacterofAtticusFinch,whoisthemainherointhebook.Atticusisanadvocateforjustice,hepersistsinprotectingthosepoorhuman(theMockingbirds)’srights,andthatisthereasonforthetitle.Inthisessay,IwilldiscussthreerolesofAtticus,agreatdad,afairlawyer,amanwhoadheretothehumanequalityandtheinfluencesonJemandScoutwhoarehischildren.Atticusisagreatdadforchildren’seducation.Hecansolvetheproblemsandeducatehischildrenverywellusinghisuniquewaysatalltime.Heisnotonlyafatherbutalsoagoodlistener.Thereisnobarrierbetweenhimandhischildren.Atthebeginning,whenScouthasthefeelingofdisgusttoMissCarolineandshedoesnotwanttogotoschoolanymore,Atticusdoesnotblameher,instead,helistensattentivelytoScout’scomplaintsandmakeherunderstandandcompromisetheteacher’sdifficulty.Hetalkseverythingtohischildrenwithoutanyconcealmentoranyabstractexplanationifthethingisnoteasyforchildrentounderstand.AtticusoncetoldhisbrotherJack‘Whenachildasksyousomething,answerhim,forgoodness’ssake.Butdon’tmakeaproductionofit.Childrenarechildren,buttheycanspotanevasionquickerthanadults,andevensimplymuddles’them.’WhenhetakeschargeofthecaseofTom’s,hischildrengotverbalaggressionfromschool,andheexplainsthemindetailsandevenallowsthemtogotothecourthouse.Atticusdothingsonhisownwaynomatterwhatotherssay.HeteachesJemandScouthowtobehavesuitablyandwhyshouldtheybehavelikethatanditshapesJemandScoutingoodnature.Foralawyer,Atticusisundoubtedlyfair.HeisnotlikemostofthelocalresidentswhohaveprejudiceagainsttheNegroes.Ignoringtheneighbors’incomprehensionandscolding,AtticusstickstodefendforinnocentTomandneverlosefaithinthetoughtime.LearnedbyAtticus’sattitudetowardstheNegroes,JemandScoutrespecttheNegroesjustliketheirfathers.Inthefinalpart,evenstrongJemcriesforTom’sunjustlytreat.Wheninthecourthouse,Atticusisnotonlyalawyerasanoccupation,histestimonyalsoembodiesthatheisamanwhoisdoingthebestofhisabilitytodispeltheconceptoftheracialdiscriminationamongthewhitemen.Now,gentlemen,inthiscountryourcourtsarethegreatlevelers.Inourcourts,allmenarecreatedequal.Iamnoidealisttobelievefirmlyintheintegrityofourcourtsandofourjurysystem.That’snoidealtome.Thatisaliving,workingreality!NowI’mconfidentthatyougentlemenwillreviewwithoutpassiontheevidencethatyouhaveheard,cometoadecision,andrestorethismantohisfamily.ThislawcasenotonlyconcernsaboutTom’sfatebutalsotheAmericanjurysystem.Wecanseetheloopholefromthecase.ThejuryismadeofwhitemenandmostofthemhaveprejudiceontheNegroesandthatwillcausetheinjusticeofthecase.Atticus(alsotheauthor)appealsracialequalitytoallmen.MockingbirdsaretheinnocentpeopleintheworldandwehavetheabilitytoprotectthemasAtticussays.Followingtheseanalysis,itisclearthatAtticusFinchishonest,fair,idealisticandagreatdad.Heistheembodimentofperfectionintheauthor’sworldandIfeelthatthesocietywillbemuchmoreharmonyifwecanfollowAtticus.
